The idea of founding the University of Concepción was an old aspiration of the penquistas. Since the last century, distinguished rectors of the Liceo de Concepción advocated the creation of professional careers under the tutelage of that campus. This idea, which had great support within Penquista society, had not been able to materialize mainly, due to the lack of organization "of all the people who thought this way," says an article in the newspaper El Sur, dated February 1917. This article could appear overestimated to the Penquista society of the time, but it is based on the impression that the inhabitants of the capital had at the beginning of this century, of the inhabitants of Concepción, vigorous and organized men, with a great spirit of initiative. The Universidad Católica del Maule assumes the professional training of its students for the region, the country and the world, who will be trained in light of the principles and foundations of the Institution. In this Training Model, the theoretical-conceptual foundations, the pedagogical approach, guidelines for the operational exercise and curricular definitions are made explicit, all in harmony with the Institutional Educational Project (PEI). With a practical sense, this Model allows the development and anchoring of training itineraries, from their design and implementation, to their evaluation, follow-up and monitoring. In the context of educational public policy, the current requirements of the local and national community are collected here, expressed by the various actors and social, political, economic, cultural and religious organizations. In this scenario, four training axes are defined: Comprehensive Quality, Regional Sociocultural Identity, Inclusive Social Responsibility and Knowledge Construction, with Innovation as a cross-cutting element of these training axes. They constitute the foundations of the UCM training itineraries and are operationalized in a curriculum oriented towards competencies and learning outcomes, which promotes the training of competent, autonomous, reflective professionals with ethical actions in accordance with the Christian vision of the UCM. . The UCM Training Model must guarantee the principles of relevance, coherence and relevance of the curriculum, considering the flexibility, adaptability and adjustments in time demanded by the knowledge society. This is a guiding document for the University's training process, which is articulated with the PEI to promote dialogue between the different actors: academics, students, officials, the local and national community. For the academics and officials of the Universidad del Norte, the news about Arica caused surprise, although the event had had a long incubation process. It was unexpected that it came to light when the conversations with the Church did not come to an end and without the rectory of the university has had any influence on the decision. It had a long incubation since the 1960s the Arica headquarters had been aspiring to be independent of Antofagasta, as there were tensions between the two university centers. The University of Bío-Bío is heir to the most ancient tradition of state and public higher education in the Biobío region. Its origins lay in the creation of the State Technical University (UTE) on April 9, 1947, during Gabriel González Videla’s presidency. The creation of the Ñuble campus of the University of Chile, first as a regional College, had been the result of a wide civic movement aimed at avoiding young graduates from secondary education to emigrate to Santiago or other cities to enter higher education. In the beginning, it was located on the premises of the Santa Cecilia Musical Society and in one building on Libertad Avenue, where the Language School used to work. After that, in 1973, it received a donation of 33 hectares from the rural area of El Mono, the property of Fernando May Didier; that is when the construction of the current campus Fernando May began. In 1981 the assets of the growing IPROCH rose with the addition of the former premises of the Teacher’s School of Chillán, where now the La Castilla campus is located. Later on, in 1988, the merging between the University of Bío-Bío and the IPROCH formed the institution currently known as University of Bío-Bío, the combination of two institutions that committed themselves to work along and build a common history.
